The lower level of Preemption House
had an amazing array of dioramas & paintings
which depicted the early history of Naperville.

This general store gives us an idea
of the products available to homemakers
in the early days of the settlement.

They came inland on horseback
& in wagons, bringing with them
all they owned & all the hope
& determination it would take
to tame a new land.

Another culture & people
were already in place.
Here they are meeting
with some of those
Native Americans.

The local tavern was one of the
main meeting places for
"the guys."

The display has a large number of paintings by this artist
& it would be worth your while
to pay a visit to see them
when you have the time
& are in the area.
Naper Settlement is located next to NCHS,
& you'll recognize some of the
buildings located there,
such as the Martin Mitchell Museum.

A tour of the
settlement grounds
affords the
opportunity to walk
through several
historic buildings,
such as a residence,
fully furnished
& with a docent
to explain daily life in that
period.
At left is a scene
from the settlement.
